Blog - PSEUDOEXFOLIATION

Pseudoexfoliation is a hereditary condition that mainly affects those with eastern European and Scandinavian descent. It is a bit complicated to explain in this forum. However, if you are going to have cataract surgery and you are in this hereditary descent, you need to make sure they check you for it, because the surgery needs to be done differently. In my case, I was not aware of this condition and the cataract surgery was not done the right way and after 7 years, the implanted lens displaced and this happened rather suddenly. I have always had regular eye exams and a regular eye doctor may not see this condition, but a doctor doing cataract surgery can. I had to be referred to a retina specialist. I was blind in my left eye for 2 wks until surgery to remove and repair could be scheduled. When the lens is removed, a new one cannot be put in the same place, another long story. I was legally blind in this eye for 4 months and after 7 months the eye is doing very well. I feel I should share this information – don’t want anyone else to go through this.
